Subject: Limiting Police Union Contracts in Virginia
Dear [Delegate/Senator Last Name],
My name is [your first and last name] and I am a concerned citizen who lives in your district / [your city/town].
Across the country, police unions have chronically and systematically used contract stipulations to circumvent accountability for misconduct. Police union contracts are often used to obstruct investigations, limit oversight and discipline, purge misconduct records, disqualify complaints, and require cities to foot the bill for officer misconduct.
This past year, Virginia repealed its 1993 ban on public unions. Since May 2021, public employees - including police - in the state of Virginia have been able establish unions in their localities.
I urge you to support legislation that limits police union contracts strictly to matters of salary and benefits.
Sincerely,
Your name

Hello, I’m calling to reach [Delegate/Senator Last Name]. My name is [your first and last name] and I live in [your city/town]. I’m calling to urge [Delegate/Senator Last Name] to support legislation to limit police union contracts in Virginia to only matters of salary and benefits.
It is critical that we ban police union contracts from including stipulations on any matters relating to misconduct or discipline. These matters are chronically used to circumvent accountability in cases of police brutality.
Again, I urge [Delegate/Senator Last Name] to support state legislation limiting police union contracts.
